SSAT vs ISEE: the real differences for 2026–27
Short answer
The SSAT bases the test level on your child's current grade, while the ISEE uses the grade they're applying to. The Middle and Upper SSAT take off a quarter point for each wrong answer; the ISEE has no wrong-answer penalty.
Two differences matter most. The level rules differ: the SSAT goes by your child’s current grade, and the ISEE goes by the grade they’re applying to. The guessing rules differ: the Middle and Upper SSAT take off a quarter point for each wrong answer, and the ISEE has no penalty. Both tests are run by E3n. Start by checking which test each of your schools accepts. Everything below comes from E3n’s official 2026–27 pages, listed under the article.
Side by side (Middle and Upper levels)
| SSAT | ISEE | |
|---|---|---|
| Level is based on | Your child’s current grade: Middle for grades 5–7, Upper for grades 8–11 | The grade your child is applying to: Middle for grades 7–8, Upper for grades 9–12 |
| Scored sections | Verbal (60 questions, 30 min), Quantitative (50 questions in two 30-minute parts), Reading (40 questions, 40 min) | Verbal Reasoning (40 questions, 20 min), Quantitative Reasoning (37, 35 min), Reading Comprehension (36, 35 min), Mathematics Achievement (47, 40 min) |
| Writing | 25-minute writing sample, not scored | 30-minute essay, not scored; schools get a copy, families don’t |
| Wrong answers | Lose a quarter point each at the Middle and Upper levels; skipped questions count 0. (The Elementary SSAT has no penalty.) | No penalty, so answer every question |
| Score scale | Upper: 500–800 per section (total 1500–2400). Middle: 440–710 per section (total 1320–2130) | 760–940 per section, plus a percentile rank and a stanine compared with same-grade students over the past three years |
| How often you can test | Every Standard paper date, plus one Flex test and one at-home test a year. Prometric: currently one test, which E3n says will rise to two later this fall | Once per testing season: Fall (August–November), Winter (December–March) and Spring/Summer (April–July), so up to three times a year |
| Fees (US, Middle and Upper) | $177 Standard paper or school Flex, $263 at home, $250 at Prometric, $272 Flex through a consultant | $170 at a school or for school-run at-home testing, $225–255 at a testing office, $250 at Prometric, $250 for ISEE-run at-home testing |
| Score timing | Paper: usually within two weeks. At home: the Wednesday after the test. Prometric: the Wednesday after each testing week | Usually 3–5 days after an online test and 5–10 days after a paper test |
The differences that change how your child prepares
- Guessing strategy is opposite. On the Middle and Upper SSAT, a wrong answer costs a quarter point and a skip costs nothing, so a blind guess can lower the score. On the ISEE, wrong answers carry no penalty, so your child should answer every question. Try the SSAT raw score calculator to see how the penalty adds up.
- The level rules can put the same child on different levels. A 4th grader applying to 5th grade takes the SSAT Elementary Level, which is based on current grade, but the ISEE Lower Level, which is based on the grade they’re applying to.
- The ISEE has a separate math achievement section. The ISEE splits math into Quantitative Reasoning and Mathematics Achievement. The SSAT has one Quantitative section in two parts.
- ISEE reports include a stanine from 1 to 9. A stanine groups percentile ranks into nine bands. Our ISEE percentile to stanine tool shows how a percentile converts.
- Retake rules differ. The ISEE allows one test per season. The SSAT allows every Standard paper date, plus one Flex, one at-home test and a limited number of Prometric tests.
Which should your child take?
If a school accepts only one test, take that one. If it accepts either, consider trying a practice test of each before deciding. Keep the guessing rules in mind: on the ISEE, students should answer every question, while on the Middle and Upper SSAT, skipping a question they can’t narrow down avoids the quarter-point penalty.
