Middle and Upper sectionsThe Middle and Upper SSAT has a 25-minute unscored writing sample, 50 math questions (two 30-minute parts), 40 reading questions (40 min), 60 verbal questions (30 min), and a 16-question unscored experimental section (15 min).4
Score rangesSSAT section scores range from 500-800 at the Upper Level, 440-710 at the Middle Level, and 300-600 at the Elementary Level, with totals of 1500-2400, 1320-2130, and 900-1800.5
Guessing penaltyIn 2026-27 the Middle and Upper SSAT still takes off a quarter point for each wrong answer (no change for skipped questions); the Elementary SSAT has no penalty.6
