What's on the TACHS? Subjects, subtests and timing
Short answer
The TACHS covers four areas, Reading, Written Expression, Mathematics and Ability (reasoning with figures), in six timed subtests. Standard testing time is about 2 hours 10 minutes.
The TACHS measures four areas, in six timed subtests.
The four areas
| Area | Notes |
|---|---|
| Reading | Scratch paper allowed |
| Written Expression | Scratch paper allowed |
| Mathematics | Scratch paper allowed; on-screen calculator for eligible portions |
| Ability | Reasoning with figures; the official sample items include figure matrices and figure classification |
Timing and rules
| Testing time | About 2 hours 10 minutes, or about 3 hours 15 minutes with extended time |
| Breaks | Optional 5-minute breaks after the first three subtests; 1-minute pauses after subtests 4 and 5 |
| Calculator | A basic four-function calculator is built into the test for the portions where it’s allowed (new in 2026); no personal calculators |
| Scratch paper | Allowed for Reading, Written Expression and Mathematics, but not for Ability |
| Wrong answers | No penalty, so answer every question |
| Where | Online, at home, on your own computer |
The TACHS Parent Guide notes that many students run out of time, so timed practice helps. Official materials don’t break down how the six subtests split across the four areas.
