Can you use a calculator on the TACHS? The 2026 rules

Short answer

Yes, for part of the test. New in 2026, a basic four-function calculator is built into the TACHS for the portions where it's allowed. Your child can't bring or use their own calculator.

Yes, and this is new for 2026. The TACHS now has a basic four-function calculator built into the online test, for the portions where a calculator is allowed. Personal calculators still aren’t allowed. (TACHS Parent Guide)

Why you might have read the opposite

One document on tachsinfo.com, the Testing PDF, still says students may not use calculators. The TACHS Parent Guide and the tachsinfo.com homepage both describe the built-in calculator, so the Testing PDF appears to be out of date. For the 2026 calculator rule, go by the TACHS Parent Guide and the tachsinfo.com homepage.

What this means for your child

  • The calculator is on screen. The 2026 TACHS is taken online at home, so the calculator is part of the test window, not something on the desk. (TACHS website)
  • It’s basic. Four functions means add, subtract, multiply and divide. It won’t do the thinking for multi-step problems, so setting up the problem still matters most.
  • Scratch paper is allowed for some sections. It’s allowed for Reading, Written Expression and Mathematics, but not for the Ability section, which uses figure-based reasoning questions.
  • Practice the way the test works. If your child usually works on paper with a handheld calculator, have them try a few practice problems using an on-screen calculator.

Calculators on the TACHS and the HSPT

The TACHS and the HSPT have different calculator rules.
