Who can take the TACHS, and can you retake it?
Short answer
Only current 8th graders can take the TACHS, and only once, so there's no retake. Students applying for a grade other than 9th apply directly to the high school instead.
The TACHS has strict eligibility rules.
The rules
- Only current 8th graders can take the TACHS.
- Each student takes it only once, so there’s no retake if the first result disappoints.
- Students applying for a grade other than 9th don’t take the TACHS. They apply directly to the high school.
Because there’s only one attempt, prepare before test day rather than counting on a second try.
Which schools use it
The TACHS is used by Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of New York, the Diocese of Brooklyn/Queens and the Diocese of Rockville Centre (Long Island). Catholic high schools in Newark and Paterson use the HSPT instead; see TACHS vs HSPT.
