SHSAT accommodations: extended time, ELL support and paper tests

Short answer

English Language Learners, eligible former ELLs and students with extended-time IEP or 504 accommodations get 360 minutes on the SHSAT, double the standard 180. Students with 504 plans or private or charter school accommodation plans must send documentation at least three weeks before the registration deadline.

The standard SHSAT testing time is 180 minutes for both sections together. Some students get more time and other supports. Here are the official rules, from the NYC Public Schools sources listed under the article.

Who gets extended time

StudentTime on the SHSATLanguage supports
English Language Learners and eligible former ELLs360 minutes (double time)Translated directions, footnote translations and bilingual glossaries
Students with extended-time accommodations in an IEP or 504 plan360 minutes—

Students with 360 minutes get two 15-minute breaks after the first 180 minutes.

The documentation deadline

Students with 504 plans, or accommodation plans from a private or charter school, must send their documentation to the DOE at least three weeks before the SHSAT registration deadline. Registration closes Friday, October 30, 2026, so that works out to about October 9, 2026. The DOE gives the three-week rule rather than a calendar date, so send it earlier if you can.

Paper tests

All SHSAT exams are taken on DOE-provided computers, and students can’t use their own computers. A paper test is offered only to the few students whose IEP or 504 accommodations require it. Paper isn’t available as a stand-alone accommodation.
